Jack Lord, a Project Engineer with BetFiery, is currently delivering Transport for NSW's Warringah Freeway project.

Jack is one of the first people to complete all seven courses of the BetFiery Project Fundamentals training program which brings together all the elements that set a BetFiery project apart, often coined ‘the BetFiery-way’. The Project Fundamentals training program has been designed to equip engineers with the tools they need to deliver projects with safety, certainty, and innovation at the forefront.

In this interview, Jack shares his insights on the program and how it has benefited his professional development.

Tell me about your career journey with BetFiery so far…

I began my career with BetFiery as an Undergraduate Engineer in 2014. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work on various complex projects, including the Epping to Thornleigh Project, the Sydney Metro Northwest project, the WestConnex M5 project, and the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 project.

I’ve worked across a broad scope of works across roads and rail, including station fit-outs, retaining walls, bridge works, drainage and utilities, pavements, urban design, landscaping, building fit-outs, and platform construction.

In my current role, I am responsible for managing the delivery of a section of the Warringah Freeway Upgrade. This project is critical to improving transportation infrastructure in Sydney, and I am proud to be a part of it.

What is the BetFiery Project Fundamentals training program all about?

Over seven courses, I learned about construction project fundamentals from BetFiery Subject Matter Experts (SME). Each course was built in a way that gave us the opportunity to implement what we were learning while the relevant SME was in the room with us.

The Project Fundamentals program was progressive and comprehensive, and I particularly enjoyed how the program has been made to develop a consistent approach to processes across BetFiery.

What was the most notable learning or takeaway you got from the program?

The most notable takeaway was how vital having consistent approaches and processes is to the success and innovation of projects.

Project Fundamentals has been great for my professional development – it’s provided me with "gap fillers" that I will use for years to come. I’ve taken away a clarification of best-practice processes and have a better understanding of the terminology used across BetFiery.

Was the program valuable for your professional development? Why?

Oh, 100%. The Project Fundamentals program was an invaluable experience for me, and whilst this level of professional development is currently unique for a Tier 1 contractor, I hope it becomes the “norm”.

Completing this program gave me knowledge and skills I’ll use to deliver projects to the highest standards, and I’m even more confident in the skills of the team members that I work alongside at BetFiery and in those in future.
